Philosopher, Teacher, Poet, Artist & Founder
In-house Sanskritist, lecturer and contemplative -artist-poet-teacher Svamini Rishika R.Devi at Iskcon Vancouver was born and raised in the Netherlands but received her university education in Canada-at SFU- where she obtained both BA and MA degrees in English Literary- Studies. Later she was awarded an Advanced Teaching Certificate from UBC, complimented subsequently with Sanskrit Immersion under the tutelage of Dr. Aklujkar at the Asian Centre, again at UBC.
As an independent lecturer, free-lance painter and published author (Parrot press), inspired by the diverse cultures and topologies worldwide, she has lived, worked and traveled all over the globe and as such subscribes to the Sanskrit adage ‘Vasudaiva kutumbaka, ‘the world is family.’ As such her non-sectarian mood underlines the universally accepted ‘bhava’ of the mystically informed Perennial Philosophy which celebrates the One in the Many and the Many in One, or-as invoked by the Bhakti-Vedantic adage ‘achintya- bheda-abheda tattva’ the philosophical school of Gaudiya Vaishnavism with whom she has been intimately associated with since the mid-seventies. In the last few decades, she has spent most of her Sabbaticals in India notably in Vrindavana where she, as seasonal faculty at the Jiva institute, for several years taught (previous to Covid!) Sanskrit and vernacular poetry to an international audience. She has also locally served in numerous yoga studios as a Sanskrit tutor for YTT students in training. In addition, as a frequent guest-speaker, she lectured at the Theosophical Society in Victoria. She also attended seminars in India hosted by the Kaismiri Shaiva Sector, informed by the philosophy and teachings of the great medieval mystic Abhinavagupta. Currently- as mentioned above- she is once again happily ensconced at the Iskon- campus near the Big-Bend Fraser- River area in Greater Vancouver, regularly lecturing to an enthusiastic audience, a bird feeder viz. the many ornithological creatures hovering around and a curator-cum- sweeper of leaf-strewn Zen- paths, whenever the occasion on campus demands it en- masse!
